In the early 1920s, with an exponential rise in demand for Mah Jongg sets in the United States and throughout parts of Europe, the time-honored tradition of hand carving had to change. No longer were designs drawn on tiles and carved with hand gouges and chisels. Instead, branding irons burned images on to the tile surfaces, transferring designs and making the tiles easier to carve.

Later, efficient foot-powered drills enabled carvers to use templates from pantographs. But no matter how the designs were imposed on the tiles, the painting was always done by hand.

As the enthusiasm for the game continued to build, the wonderful art of the tiles surely helped. The sets have stories to tell, and while many of these will never be completely known, the next few pages give a glimpse of what the creators of these tiles intended to convey.
